Children are the future leaders of our world, the ones who will be responsible for the issues that spring up within our society, yet approximately 2.2 billion are living in poverty without proper education, shelter, and even adequate food. How they are raised as a child will affect their future and how they impact our world. In our society, the dilemma for equal access of resources for both rich and poor is something that we still strive to solve. A child from a wealthier upbringing is more likely to have better education, shelter, medical access, etc, than that of a child from a modest upbringing. A country with a considerably high rate of poverty is Kenya, located in the continent of Africa. An immensely impoverished area within Kenya is Kibera, the second largest slum in all of Africa, located within the heart of Nairobi, the nation's capitol and business center. What is unique about Kibera is that it sits within the most modern city of Kenya, while UN-HABITAT is located within close proximity to Kibera. It is estimated that 750,000 people live in each square mile, or about 37 people per square feet, making it one of the most crowded places on earth. About 50% of the people in Kibera are unemployed, raising the need for its children to be taught the necessary skills to succeed in today's modern world. The situation of intolerance in Kibera is prevalent, as the five largest ethnic groups in Kenya, Kikuyu, Kisii, Luo, Luhya, and Kamba live there, while the Nubians, a Muslim group of people from Sudan initially inhabited the area in World War I. Violent clashes between these groups often occurred in Kibera. The population of Kibera also does not have competent housing, with the average house being a 12 ft by 12 ft shack built from mud, concrete, and tin. The Kenyan people do not even own their own houses, as all the land belongs to that of the government. Only 20% of the people, through the help of UN-Habitat, have electricity. The situation in Kibera used to be worse, with clean water not even being provided. However, presently, through the help of organizations and NGOs, citizens are able to get water from the municipal council and the World Bank. Charities are also shown to be the only place in Kibera for medical access, as there are no hospitals or government clinics. Although the situation seems hopeless, the number of organizations working to help the people of Kibera show that actions can be accomplished to have a huge positive impact on people. Examples such as Carolina for Kibera and Self Help Africa represent just two of the countless organizations that many people in Africa depend on to survive. These organizations show that hope is still prevalent within many places even through all the unfortunate events.
